Imagine engaging your bilingual kindergarten or first grade students with the timeless story of Rapunzel while seamlessly enhancing their reading comprehension in both Spanish and English--sounds like a fairytale come true, right?
At the start of the year, bilingual Kindergarten and First Grade Teachers face a host of challenges that make teaching reading particularly daunting. Students can come with varying levels of reading proficiency as well as different levels of language proficiency in either and both Spanish and English. Limited vocabulary further complicates your job of making reading and reading activities accessible for all students in your room. Finding reading resources that are in both Spanish and English that appropriately address these issues can create an overwhelming season for bilingual and dual language educators at this critical time.

At the beginning of the year in Kindergarten or First Grade
We don't know exactly what to expect in regards to the kiddos. For me, the best way to start off the year is to review, or to teach something that is accessible to all the kids. That's why I love using visuals, yet always giving students the option to write. This particular Rapunzel Reading Comprehension Freebie does that for me! It will work for you too.
What's the best way to use the Rapunzel Freebie?
1. Project and read the story.
2. Teach sequencing.
3. Teach story elements.
Reading Comprehension Activities
1. Reading to your class is so important. Start by reading, or modeling how you want your class to read the story. Read it in the language that you are teaching: Spanish or English. The story is projectable, so the only preparation for you is to project the story for the class to see and read along! Eventually, upload the story to student iPads.
2. Then choose from the printables the most appropriate skill that you want to assess, teach or review. You can choose sequencing beginning, middle and end. This is almost completely visual, but you can also give students the choice to write on a separate sheet of paper if needed.
3. You can also use the character or setting sheets. These are also visual and students choose from the images which images are correct. Then they cut and paste.
4. Finally, you can use the sheet to teach mood or the chart to compare-contrast. The sheet to teach mood has quite a bit of visuals, and it offers the opportunity for students to write as well. Your compare-contrast chart does not contain visuals, but offers space for children to draw or write.
